How Does a Dog NFC ID Tag Work, and How Do You Update Its Details?
Short answer: the VitalPaws Geo-Tag is an NFC chip inside a collar tag: no battery, no app, nothing to pair. Whoever finds your dog taps it with their phone: your dog’s page opens with your number, a WhatsApp button and a one-tap share-your-location button, and at the same moment you get an email with the finder’s approximate area (based on their internet connection, not GPS). To change any detail, open vitalpaws.in/pages/manage-tag, enter the WhatsApp number you registered with plus your manage code, edit and save; the tag’s link never changes. The one thing that page can’t change is the WhatsApp number itself: message us and we fix it at our end.
What happens when someone taps the tag
The gate is open for ten seconds, or the leash slips through your walker’s fingers, and an hour later your dog is in a stranger’s compound three streets away. That stranger can’t read a microchip, and a brass plate helps only if the number on it is still yours. The Geo-Tag exists for that stranger: one tap, and they are talking to you.
NFC (near-field communication) is the same tap that pays at a card machine. The chip in the tag holds one thing, the link to your dog’s page, and has no power of its own; the finder’s phone powers it for the split second they touch.
- They hold the back of their phone against the tag. No app, no sign-up, no scanner: just the phone’s own NFC, built into most recent smartphones.
- Your dog’s page opens on their phone: “You found me!”, your dog’s photo and name, anything you wrote for finders, and three buttons: call you, WhatsApp you, or “Found me? Tap to share your location”, which sends their exact spot to you on WhatsApp, once.
- You get an email at the same moment, before the finder has decided what to do.
The email you get, word for word
It comes from “VitalPaws Reunite” (realvitalpaws@gmail.com) with the subject line “[your dog’s name]’s tag was just scanned”. Inside: the approximate area (city, state and country, from the finder’s internet connection), a “View approximate location on Google Maps” link, and a plain warning that this is based on their internet connection, not GPS. The exact pin comes only if the finder taps share location, and it comes on WhatsApp.
- It fires every time the page is opened. A curious neighbour who taps twice sends two emails, which also makes it easy to test: tap your own tag and watch your inbox.
- It goes only to the email on your registration. Leave that blank and no alert is sent; the finder can still call or WhatsApp you, but you lose the early warning.
NFC tag, microchip or GPS tracker: what each one actually does
| VitalPaws Geo-Tag (NFC) | Microchip | GPS tracker | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | A chip in a collar tag holding a link | A chip implanted under the skin | A battery-powered device on the collar |
| Who can read it | Anyone with a smartphone | A vet or shelter with the right scanner | You, through its app |
| Needs a battery? | No | No | Yes, charge it regularly |
| Needs an app? | No, for you or the finder | No, but needs a scanner | Yes, usually with a subscription |
| Tells you where your dog is? | Approximate area by email; exact pin if the finder shares it | No | Yes, live, while the battery and network last |
| Best for | The stranger who finds your dog | Proving the dog is yours at a vet or shelter | A dog that bolts often, if you keep it charged |
A microchip proves ownership, a tracker watches, and the tag is what the stranger holding your dog can actually use. The limit is just as plain: the tag cannot find your dog on its own. Nobody taps, nothing happens.
Registering the tag the first time
Both editions, the Standard (hand-painted, uniquely lettered) and the Premium (3D-printed paw print, tougher finish), work the same way and open the same page. Register right after checkout at Register Your Tag — nothing ships until you have. It asks for:
- Your dog’s name, breed, date of birth and city, plus a photo if you like.
- Your name and the WhatsApp number you will actually answer; it becomes your login for updates, so get it right.
- Your email, where the scan alerts go.
- Optional: a second contact, your Instagram, anything a finder should know, and your order number so we can match the tag to the page.
Tap “Create My Pet’s Page” and two things appear instantly: your dog’s link and your manage code. Tap “Send Link + Code to My WhatsApp” so both sit in your own chat. Your tag ships already pointed at that page; nothing to activate when it arrives, just clip it to the collar. Not sure your tag is linked to your page? WhatsApp +91 80507 70671 with your order number. Not for you after all? Ship it back within 30 days of delivery, in working condition, for a full refund.
How to update the details on your tag
Moved city, a new health note, a better photo: all of it is edited by you, on Update Your Tag:
- Enter the WhatsApp number you registered with and your manage code, then tap “Find My Tag”. That pair is what proves the page is yours.
- Your page loads with its link at the top (“this will not change”) and every field open: photo, name, breed, date of birth, city, your name, email, second contact, Instagram, note to finders.
- Edit, then tap “Save Changes”. You will see “Saved! Your link stays exactly the same.” The chip still points at the same link, so there is nothing to re-write or re-register.
Like the QR code on our pouch, the link on the tag is frozen the day it is made; everything behind it is yours to change.
Wrong WhatsApp number, or lost your manage code?
One owner wrote to us with exactly this problem: the phone number registered on the tag was wrong and needed correcting. Here is why the form cannot do it and what to do instead. That number is how the update page identifies you, so the page itself cannot change it, and if it is wrong you may not be able to look the tag up at all. Don’t fight the form. WhatsApp +91 80507 70671 or email realvitalpaws@gmail.com with your dog’s name, your order number and the number you want, and we change it at our end. Same route if the manage code never reached your WhatsApp.
FAQ
Does the finder need an app to use the tag?
No. They tap the tag with their phone’s built-in NFC and your dog’s page opens with your number, a WhatsApp button and a share-your-location button. No app, no sign-up, no scanner.
Does the VitalPaws Geo-Tag track my dog like a GPS?
No. It has no battery and no GPS. It works when someone taps it: you get an email with the finder’s approximate area, and the finder can choose to share an exact pin with you on WhatsApp.
The phone number registered on my dog’s tag is wrong. How do I fix it?
That number is how the update page identifies you, so it cannot be changed there. WhatsApp +91 80507 70671 or email realvitalpaws@gmail.com with your dog’s name, order number and the correct number, and we change it; your tag’s link stays the same.
What do I get when someone taps the tag?
An email titled “[your dog’s name]’s tag was just scanned” with the finder’s approximate area, a Google Maps link to it, and a note that it is based on their internet connection, not GPS. If the finder taps share location, their exact pin reaches you on WhatsApp.
Does the tag work if my phone is switched off?
Yes. The tag has no battery, and the page opens on the finder’s phone, not yours. The email and WhatsApp messages wait for you; only a call needs your phone on at that moment.
One tap by a stranger, your number on their screen, an email in your inbox. No battery, no app, no subscription. 30-day ship-back guarantee.
